When we were preparing the site along the
Northeast Cape Fear River, we found it had
previously been the location of the Hilton
Lumber Company. The waterfront was a
vibrant, economic center in Wilmington
centuries ago with wharves stretching the
half mile property where the Cape Fear
Marina now stands. While putting in the
pilings for the docks, hundreds of heart
pine logs were found on the riverbed which
had fallen from barges as they were
transported down the river. These logs had
been perfectly preserved in the mud without
light or oxygen to hasten their decay.
The centuries old logs have been milled into
exquisite flooring and are truly unique and a
treasure.
